Our New Home!
(Warning - This document contains dated information.)
In October of 1999, Cindi and I bought a Victorian farmhouse in
historic Nevada City, CA.
First built in the 1890's, it was recently
remodeled by a couple in town who've done the same thing to several old
homes in the area. It's got new plumbing, gas, wiring, etc, but retains its
romantic charm, including hardwood floors and high ceilings.
Nevada City is up in California's gold country, nestled in the Sierra foothills
between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe. The town is quite a tourist mecca, with lots of
old buildings, etc. The fall colors are stunning (though they do translate into
quite a bit of raking around our house!), and we usually get
one or two snows each year.
I'm still taking the train into Oakland every other week to work in my
research group and spending the rest of my
time at home doing TransPac
work. I was unsuccessful this year in landing a part-time teaching position at
Nevada Union High School.
Apparently, those jobs are
pretty hard to come by, partly because the district is second in Calfornia
(as measured by SSAT and other standardized tests). I've been trying to
sell them on my background in technology, but with the recent decline in
enrollment, it's an uphill battle. They've already got an award-winning Physics
instructor, but a couple of math positions over the summer. I took some tests
in June to add a supplementary math teaching
credential, but they didn't even call me in for an interview.
Cindi's got her application in at nearby Sierra
Nevada Memorial Hospital, but they're not beating down our door either.
For now (believe it or not), she's still commuting to Stanford (3+ hours
by car) and staying a 5 nights every 2 weeks with various friends in the
Bay Area. Since Ken & Chris moved up here recently,
she's had to branch out a bit with her couch-surfing.
Here's a picture of our new home from the front. Check out all
the trees!
