Liloo Gets a Bodyguard

Sam - the Gentle Giant
We had always planned on getting a companion for Liloo, but it took a little while for us to make our way down to the pound. We let her interview a couple of candidates in their fenced play area, but she and a pit bull they were calling Gandalf hit it off from the very start. In fact, when we had to take him back to the kennels, he went flat on the floor and put on the saddest face he could muster. We came back on the very first day we could legally take ownership, and he's been with us ever since.
Sam is in many ways the yin to Liloo's yang. He's male, 57 pounds of solid muscle, and the most mellow, friendly, loving dog you'd ever meet. He is exceptionally tolerant of Liloo's nearly constant facial attacks, and they play for hours together every day. Although he's powerfully built, there's something about the way Sam approaches people that instantly puts them at ease. In fact, strangers are often kneeling down to pet him when Liloo seizes the opportunity to dart in with her "attack kisses".
Sam was picked up as a stray with no collar or tags, so his history is a complete mystery. He was obviously well fed given his beautiful physique, and his wonderful disposition suggests that he couldn't have been mistreated. Whenever I was outside with him for the first few weeks, I was in a constant panic that some homeless guy would call out, "Hey! What are you doing with my dog? Come here Bowser!" Now that we've had him for a few months, I'm starting to relax, and Sam is now responding well to his new name.
